So, it’s raining…

Chicago, the Windy City, is known for its unpredictable weather. I’ve personally experienced disappointment when a day of sightseeing with friends is (supposedly) ruined by rain in this city. But don’t let a rainy day dampen your spirits! The city offers a plethora of indoor activities that can turn a gloomy day into an exciting adventure. As a student, I’m mindful of sightseeing costs as they can soon add up. I’ve included low-cost, but still just as awesome activities that are perfect for solo explorers, a group of friends, and families.

From indulging your sweet tooth to exploring world-class museums, here’s a comprehensive guide to making the most of a rainy day in Chicago.

This is actually something I did on a rainy day and it did not disappoint! Start your rainy day adventure at the Museum of Ice Cream, a whimsical wonderland that’s sure to brighten even the gloomiest weather. Located near the River Walk and Chicago Tribune, this interactive experience is a feast for the senses, featuring vibrant, Instagram-worthy installations and, of course, plenty of ice cream. Tickets were around $35 at the time I visited and we were treated to unlimited ice cream throughout the museum.

We were given Dove ice cream bars as soon as we walked through the door. Little did my friends and I know, we would eat our fill of ice cream (and more) by the end. This experience is the epitome of a fun rainy day activity (unlimited ice cream seals the deal) and well-worth $35. They even had hot dog flavored ice cream! Not going to lie, it wasn’t great but you have to try it if you go. They serve it on a mini hot dog bun with toppings so it actually looks like a hot dog! Dive into the sprinkle pool, ride on a frosted cookie, play mini golf, and and sample unique flavors throughout your visit. The lemon ice cream was my favorite! It’s a perfect way to inject some color and fun into a gray day. Oh, and it has the BEST photo-ops. Seriously, this place was made for Insta-worthy shots.

When the rain starts pouring, why not engage in some retail therapy? The Magnificent Mile, Chicago’s premier commercial district, offers a mile-long stretch of high-end shops, department stores, and unique boutiques. Water Tower Place, the 900 mall, and the Shops at North Bridge are all malls within the Magnificent Mile’s other solo-standing stores. The malls are all beautiful with the 900 mall featuring an upscale food court and lounge on the 6th floor. Aster Hall-the food court/lounge-is the perfect place to chill for a bit and enjoy stunning views of Lake Michigan while having a bite to eat.

Located on the Mag Mile, stop in for a drink in this HUGE Starbucks with panoramic views of the city. Fair warning: They don’t have their regular menu so come prepared to try a new drink or snack. You won’t be disappointed! This Starbucks features a bakery, cafe, upscale bar, and roof terrace with stunning views. Stop in to pick up a highly sought after Starbucks Reserve Roastery cup or mug and treat yourself to some seriously delicious food.

4. Visit the French Market

Chicago has its very own French market, complete with authentic food, handmade goods, and yes-delicious macarons. Just a short CTA ride away from the River Walk, this market is a European haven located in downtown Chicago. From the atmospheric music to the bustle of the dining commons, this indoor market is the perfect way to spend a rainy day. I have done exactly this when a day of exploring with friends was rained out. We had the best time trying delicious sandwiches and drinks, and of course finishing the day with some amazing French pastries. Even if you don’t purchase anything, the market is still worth exploring. The atmosphere is charming and seems like a little taste of Europe in Chicago!

A rainy day in Chicago isn’t complete without going to at least one museum. I advocate for the Art Institute if you are trying to stay downtown for the day, but there are buses that easily go to the museum campuses. Most of these museums will give you a discount if you show your student ID. If you live in Illinois or the Chicago area and go to school here you may even get in free! Teachers also get in free or receive a discount. Also be on the lookout for free museum days. Who knows? You could get lucky and have your rainy day in Chicago land on a free museum day at one of the city’s awesome museums.

ART INSTITUTE: No rainy day in Chicago is complete without a visit to the world-renowned Art Institute. Home to an impressive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, including Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte” and Grant Wood’s “American Gothic,” the museum offers hours of artistic exploration. I usually spend 2-3 hours here if I can, but it took me a few visits before I saw all the exhibits. Research beforehand and decide what your must-see places are going to be. I personally love the miniature rooms, medieval halls, and European paintings. With over 300,000 works spanning centuries and continents, you’ll find yourself lost in a world of creativity, forgetting all about the rain outside.

FIELD MUSEUM: For those fascinated by natural history, the Field Museum is an absolute must-visit. Meet Sue, the most complete T-Rex skeleton ever discovered, explore ancient Egyptian tombs, and marvel at sparkling gemstones. The museum’s immersive exhibits transport visitors across time and around the globe, offering a perfect rainy day escape. It’s also a ten minute walk from the Shedd Aquarium!

SHEDD AQUARIUM: Complete your rainy day tour with a visit to the Shedd Aquarium, where you can explore aquatic life from around the world without getting wet (well, any wetter than you already are). Home to over 32,000 animals, the Shedd offers an array of exhibits that showcase the diversity of marine life. From the playful antics of sea otters to the graceful movements of beluga whales, there’s something to captivate visitors of all ages. I personally love the polar zone (penguins!) and the indoor observation steps with a panoramic view of Lake Michigan. You can watch dolphins in the indoor pool below while enjoying this breathtaking view.

Conclusion

A rainy day in Chicago doesn’t mean your plans are washed out. With world-class museums, shopping destinations, and indoor attractions, the city offers endless possibilities for entertainment and enrichment. Whether you’re satisfying your sweet tooth at the Museum of Ice Cream, admiring masterpieces at the Art Institute, or exploring underwater worlds at the Shedd Aquarium, Chicago’s indoor attractions promise to make your rainy day memorable. So next time the forecast looks gloomy, embrace the opportunity to discover the indoor treasures of this vibrant city. After all, in Chicago, every day is an adventure, rain or shine!

Essentials for a Rainy Day in the City

01

Umbrella Bag

An upscale store gave me an umbrella bag once and now I have to travel with them. Make sure they have a handle or straps like this one. Seriously a lifesaver if you are going in and out of the rain in Chicago.

02

Crossbody Belt Bag

You don’t want your purse getting wet and its contents soaking by the time you’re back to your hotel. A small crossbody fanny pack is one of the best purchases I’ve made because it sits on the front of your body. This minimizes potential theft AND keeps your belongings dry if you are holding an umbrella. You can splurge for the iconic Lululemon bag (this one is only $40 so not too bad) or check out this great dupe that’s a bit more affordable.

03

Stylish Rain Boots

These don’t have to be your muddy, tall rainboots but be sure to pack a pair of low, stylish rain boots or water-resistant shoes when traveling to Chicago. You will most likely need them! These are stylish and the ideal shoe for a rainy day in the city.
